The Best YMCAs in the Twin Cities

I joined the YMCA about a year ago, these are the best YMCAs in the Twin Cities. It took me a good 6 months before I actually started working out with any regularity. I paired up with a workout buddy (probably the best decision I ever made). Since we lived on opposite sides of town we decided to mix things up and visit a different Twin Cities YMCA each day.

All of the YMCAs that we visited were clean, all were staffed with caring and helpful people. The differences were slight, but ultimately we found two YMCAs in the Twin Cities that we really liked.

The Best YMCAs in the Twin Cities

YMCA Eagan
550 Opperman Drive
Eagan, MN 55123

This one was about equal distance between both of us so it made sense to use this one but the pool was cold, and the work out area was sort of smelly and dark. Otherwise it was a very nice Y, with plenty of classes that we talked about taking, but never got around to.

YMCA Burnsville
13850 Portland Avenue
Burnsville, MN 55337

The Burnsville Y is a really nice Y. It’s large, has a great workout area with double and triple machines. You don’t have to wait for a machine at the Burnsville Y. In addition to all the machines, there’s plenty of rowers, bikes, stepping machines etc. There’s a huge basketball court and a walking/jogging course that goes around the building. The locker rooms are clean, they don’t smell and they have a section for kids so if you don’t want a bunch of little ones running around you can avoid them.

YMCA Southdale
7355 York Avenue South
Edina, MN 55435

The Southdale Y has a large workout area, but it feels vast and slightly cold. It’s also surrounded by windows so there’s an element of feeling exposed. The pool is great. The pool is actually two pools and a hot tub. There’s a lap pool and a large pool with play area for little kids and a vortex pool. We use the vortex pool at least twice a week. It’s a great workout walking against the current. The only issue is all the kids in the vortex pool. It’s better to go earlier than later (when kids are still in school). It can be overwhelming at times when there are so many kids in there bumping into you. We’ve cut our workout short because of it.

YMCA Prior Lake
3575 N. Berens Road NW
Prior Lake, MN 55379

By far the most beautiful YMCA in the Twin Cities. Too bad it’s so far from my house. The Prior Lake Y was our weekend Y and the pool was empty whenever we were there. They have an amazing vortex pool and no kids. It was lovely, just too far away.

YMCA Midway
1761 University Avenue West
Saint Paul, MN 55104

The Midway Y was recently completely remodeled. In fact they tore the old building down and built a new one. It’s a lovely Y, almost as nice as the one in Prior Lake (it’s just not as big). It also has a great vortex pool AND they have times during the day when it is adult only so no kids to bump into. The workout area is large, has abundant machines and there’s also a walking course around the perimeter.
